Your Twelve EDT Lessons in Leinster
Essential Driver Training is the twelve-lesson programme every learner permit holder must complete before the driving test. We deliver it across all twelve Leinster counties, logged straight to your RSA portal.
EDT at a Glance
What Is Essential Driver Training
Twelve one-hour lessons. The RSA designed them. Your instructor delivers them. You complete them in an order that fits where you started.
Most learners book one lesson a week. Some do two. Anyone who tells you the law lets you finish all twelve in a fortnight is selling you something.
The programme runs through three phases. Foundation covers car controls, mirrors, basic positioning. Intermediate covers traffic, roundabouts, hazard reading, and the sort of decision-making that gets you through a busy junction. Advanced covers complex routes, parking, night driving, and the dual-carriageway awareness you'll need after the test.
Most of what we add is the bit between EDT lessons that the EDT itself doesn't cover. Mock tests. The local routes. The parking the examiner is going to ask for. The bits you'll forget if no one keeps making you do them.
We deliver EDT lessons across the twelve Leinster counties. From Drogheda to Wexford, Mullingar to Wicklow town. You choose the pickup point. We bring the instructor.
Foreign Licence Holders
If you hold a driving licence from another country and are converting to an Irish licence, a reduced six-lesson programme may apply. This covers the Intermediate and Advanced phases only. Call 01 902 3100 and we'll check your eligibility.
The Twelve EDT Lessons
What you'll cover, lesson by lesson. The RSA sets the curriculum. Your instructor sets the pace.
Car Controls
FoundationPedals, gears, steering, mirrors, blind spots. The mechanics before you touch the road.
Correct Positioning
FoundationLane discipline, road position, signalling. Where the car should be on the road, and why.
Changing Direction
FoundationTurning at junctions, observation routine, mirror-signal-manoeuvre. The steady backbone of driving.
Progression
FoundationSpeed for the conditions, braking distance, smooth acceleration. The examiner watches both ends of the pedal.
Anticipation
IntermediateReading the road ahead, predicting other drivers, hazard awareness. The lesson that turns reactive driving into thinking driving.
Junctions
IntermediateRoundabouts, T-junctions, crossroads. Three of the most common fault categories on the test sheet.
Sharing the Road
IntermediateCyclists, pedestrians, buses, motorcyclists. How to give space, when to overtake, when to wait.
Driving Safely Through Traffic
IntermediateLane changes, filter lights, busy town centres. The kind of traffic that turns up everywhere from Drogheda to Wexford.
Vulnerable Road Users
AdvancedPedestrian crossings, school zones, country lanes. Where you slow down without being told.
Rules and Regulations
AdvancedSpeed limits, road markings, signs. The Highway Code as it actually applies on a Leinster road.
Driving on Different Roads
AdvancedN-roads, dual carriageways, country lanes, town centres. Each surface with its own rhythm.
Night Driving
AdvancedHeadlight use, judging distance in low light, reading unlit country roads. The lesson most learners have never thought about.
Note on motorways. Learners are not permitted on motorways anywhere in Ireland. The EDT prepares you for everything up to and including dual carriageways. After you pass the test, we can arrange a post-licence motorway lesson so your first faster road is with an instructor, not on your own.
EDT Lesson Packages
The 12-lesson package is the lowest per-lesson rate. RSA-logged, door-to-door pickup, dual-controlled car.
If you do the EDT and the test in an automatic, your full licence carries a Code 78 restriction to automatic vehicles. More on automatic. Or call 01 902 3100.
