Royal county, Boyne-side

Navan in the centre. The Boyne valley to the north. Dublin commute to the south-east.

Meath is the Royal county. The hill of Tara held the ancient seat of Ireland's kings; Newgrange predates the pyramids; Slane and Trim hold castle and abbey ruins. None of that is decorative for a Meath learner. The Boyne valley villages are real driving country; the historic sites are roundabouts and junctions you pass on the way to your EDT lesson.

The county is large enough that the same Meath EDT runs five different shapes depending on which catchment you live in. Boyne-valley villages, Trim and west Meath, north Meath around Kells, the Dublin commuter belt around Ashbourne, and the Navan-centre catchment all behave differently.

Your Meath Approved Driving Instructor lives in your part of the county. Boyne-valley instructors know the riverside R-roads; west-Meath instructors run the Trim-Athboy-Longwood routes; commuter-belt instructors face the N3 corridor and the Dublin-edge junctions; north-Meath instructors cover the long-drive villages around Kells and Oldcastle. EDT, automatic and pretest with car hire all run from each catchment.

The Navan centre

Navan: the Royal county's test centre

Town traffic, the local roundabouts, the Boyne-side roads

Navan sits where the Boyne crosses the county. The test centre is in the town. The approach involves town-centre streets, the local ring junctions, and whichever radial road brought you in from your starting direction. Examiners use the Navan-area roads for the test loop.

Pretest practice for Navan means working those routes plus the Boyne-side R-roads that lead in from the north and west. The radial roads matter because Meath is wide enough that the centre is twenty or thirty minutes from many catchments. Book a pretest lesson with car hire to walk through the centre approach in the dual-controlled car.

EDT across the Royal county's spread

EDT shaped by the Boyne, the Royal sites and the Dublin commute

Meath EDT runs in five distinct shapes depending on which catchment a learner lives in. Navan-centre learners get the simplest sequence: short drives, regular centre-approach repetition. Boyne-valley learners spend the early lessons on the riverside R-roads through Slane, Donore and the Newgrange villages, with the Royal-county sites passing on the route. The mid-EDT step up to the run into Navan happens around lesson five or six.

Trim and west Meath learners have a longer geographic reach. The early lessons happen on the western R-roads through Trim, Longwood and Athboy. The Boyne crosses the Trim side too, so the river is part of the local geography here as well. The east-bound run to Navan for centre approach is a back-half EDT job.

South-east Meath is a different programme entirely. Ashbourne, Ratoath, Dunboyne and Clonee learners are heading into Dublin five days a week after they pass. We work the N3-corridor traffic and the high-volume Dublin-edge junctions into EDT itself, not as a post-test extra. The Navan centre approach for these learners is a short drive north on the N3.

The full EDT programme is twelve hours wherever in Meath it starts. For Meath pricing across packages, see the price list.

Roads through the Royal county

The N3 spine, the N2 north and the western R-roads

South-east on the N3 to Ashbourne and Dublin

The N3 leaves Navan south-east through Dunshaughlin, Ashbourne and Clonee toward the Dublin commute. Most south-east Meath commuters drive this every working day. EDT learners practise the Dublin-edge stretch in the back half of the programme.

North on the N2 to Slane and the Louth border

The N2 leaves Navan north past Slane and on toward Ardee in Louth. The Boyne crossing at Slane is one of the prettier driving spots in the county. North-Meath commuters use the upper stretch.

North-west to Kells and Cavan on the N3

The same N3 spine runs north-west out of Navan through Kells and on toward Cavan. North-Meath learners around Kells, Oldcastle and the Cavan-border villages use this stretch as the route into Navan for centre work.

West to Trim and the western valleys

The R-roads west out of Navan run to Trim and on through Longwood, Athboy and the western R-routes. West-Meath instructors cover the Trim-side roads for early EDT; the eastward run to Navan for centre work happens in the back half.

What our Royal-county coverage means

Five catchments managed, heritage routes used, commuter prep built in

Five-catchment EDT planning, not one-size

Meath is large enough that one EDT plan does not suit. We run different EDT shapes for the Navan catchment, the Boyne valley, west Meath, the south-east commuter belt and north Meath around Kells. Your lesson plan reflects where you actually live, not a county-average assumption.

Royal-county heritage routes, used as lessons

The Royal-county landmarks at Tara, Newgrange, Slane and Trim Castle sit on roads that Meath instructors drive weekly with EDT learners. The historical sites are not separate; they are roundabouts, junctions and approach-roads on the way to a real test centre at Navan.

Dublin-corridor commuter prep for the south-east

Ashbourne, Ratoath, Dunboyne and Clonee learners commute into Dublin five days a week after they pass. We work the N3-corridor sections and the high-volume Dublin-edge junctions into EDT, not as a post-test extra. The dual-controlled car handles the heavy traffic in the rural-driving phase.

Common Meath questions

Navan, the Boyne, Ashbourne and the Royal-county villages

Where is the Meath driving test centre

Meath has a driving test centre in Navan, the county town. Your pretest works the approach roads, town-centre traffic, junctions and roundabouts around the centre. Routes feed in from the N3 spine, the N2 north and the western R-roads from Trim. Confirm your test centre booking on the official RSA system before your test date.

Are the Boyne valley villages covered

Yes. Coverage extends across the Boyne valley including Slane, Newgrange, Knowth, Donore and the village clusters around Bective and Tara. Pickup terms match the rest of the county. Boyne-valley learners often drive past the Royal-county sites during EDT routes; the historical roads are part of everyday driving here.

Do lessons cover the Dublin commute from Ashbourne and Ratoath

Yes. The south-east Meath commuter belt around Ashbourne, Ratoath, Dunboyne and Clonee is the busiest catchment, and most learners here will drive into Dublin five days a week after they pass. We work the N3-corridor traffic and the high-volume Dublin-edge junctions into EDT itself, not as a post-test extra.

Are the Trim and west Meath villages covered

Yes. Coverage extends across west Meath from Trim through Athboy, Longwood, Summerhill, Ballivor and the smaller western valley villages. Pickup terms match the rest of the county. The drive east to Navan for centre work happens in the second half of EDT once the local R-roads are familiar.

How much do lessons cost in Meath

Meath manual lessons start from €49.00 per lesson with the 12-lesson EDT package (€587.95 total). Single manual lessons cost €53.27. Full Meath pricing is on the price list.

Can I sit the test in your car

Yes. Your Meath pretest and your driving test happen in the same dual-controlled car. We arrange the booking and the meet-up at the Navan test centre.
