Driving lessons in Kilkenny
Kilkenny is south Leinster's only test centre. Marble city sits on the Nore, halfway between Carlow and Waterford. The Kilkenny city centre asks the usual things. Town traffic, the Nore-side junctions, the marble-city ring roads. Practice turns the route into reflex.
Review and rating figures are RSA School of Motoring brand-network averages, not Kilkenny-specific.
Marble city on the Nore. Last Leinster centre before Munster.
Kilkenny is south Leinster's last test centre. Travel further south through Mooncoin or Piltown and you cross the Suir into Waterford and the Munster boundary. That puts Kilkenny in a particular position: cross-border learners from north Waterford, east Tipperary and south Carlow look at Kilkenny city as the closest Leinster option.
Kilkenny sits in south Leinster with the River Nore running north to south through the middle. Kilkenny city, the marble city, holds the centre of the county on the Nore. The valley villages line the river south to Thomastown and Inistioge. Castlecomer holds the north. The southern villages from Mooncoin and Piltown press up against the Suir, the Waterford boundary.
Kilkenny city sits on the Nore. The test centre is in the city. The approach runs through marble-city streets, the local ring junctions and whichever road brought you in from your starting direction. Mid-test loops use the Nore-side roads as standard.
Your Kilkenny Approved Driving Instructor lives in your part of the county and works the routes inward to the marble city. Castlecomer-side instructors run the N77; Nore-valley instructors run the Bennettsbridge-Thomastown roads; Suir-side instructors cover the southern villages. EDT, automatic and pretest with car hire all run from each catchment.
Kilkenny city: south Leinster's last centre
Marble-city streets, the ring junctions, the centre
Kilkenny city sits on the Nore mid-county. The test centre is in the city. The approach involves the marble-city streets, the local ring junctions, and whichever road brought you in from your starting direction. Examiners use the Nore-side roads as a regular part of the test loop because they sit close to the centre.
Pretest practice for Kilkenny means working those Nore-side roads as well as the in-city ring. Castlecomer-side learners get N77-corridor work; Suir-side learners get the southern approach loops. Book a pretest lesson with car hire to walk through the centre approach in the same dual-controlled car.
EDT shaped by the Nore valley and the Munster border
Kilkenny EDT carries some learners that other Leinster counties do not. Cross-border learners from north Waterford, east Tipperary and the Suir-side villages who would otherwise wait for a Munster centre choose Kilkenny city instead. Their EDT goes a different route: pickup local on the Suir side, lessons that work toward Kilkenny city from the south.
For Nore-valley learners, the early EDT lessons happen on the riverside R-roads through Bennettsbridge, Thomastown or Inistioge. The middle lessons step up to the run into Kilkenny city. The final lessons work the marble-city ring junctions and the centre approach.
Castlecomer-side learners have a different shape again. North Kilkenny is closer to Carlow town than to Kilkenny city by the road. We coordinate the EDT so that early lessons happen close to home on the N78 / N77 area, and the run south to Kilkenny city for centre work happens in the back half of the programme, not from lesson one.
The full EDT programme is twelve hours wherever you start it. For Kilkenny pricing across packages, see the price list.
Roads north, south, east and the Nore
Kilkenny to Carlow on the N9 and N10
The N10 leaves Kilkenny city north toward the N9 at Paulstown, and the N9 carries on into Carlow town. Kilkenny commuters with Carlow workplaces drive this every day. North-Kilkenny learners get familiar with the N9 stretch during EDT.
South toward Waterford on the N9
The N9 leaves Kilkenny south through the Nore valley villages and on toward New Ross and Waterford. Suir-side learners use the southern stretch every week. The Waterford boundary sits at the river crossing.
East to Wexford via Graiguenamanagh
The R705 and R702 run east out of Kilkenny through Graiguenamanagh, Goresbridge and Borris (in Carlow) toward Enniscorthy and Wexford. Less of a commuter route, more of a weekend route, but useful EDT terrain for valley learners.
West to Tipperary on the N76
The N76 leaves Kilkenny city west through Callan and on toward Carrick-on-Suir and Clonmel in Tipperary. West-Kilkenny commuters use it daily. EDT learners on the Callan side get a stretch of it as standard rural-driving practice.

Cross-border pickup, Nore-spine knowledge, Castlecomer coordination
Cross-border pickup from the Suir side
Mooncoin, Piltown and the southern villages sit close to the Waterford boundary. We pick up cross-border learners from north-Waterford and east-Tipperary who would otherwise face a Munster centre wait. The lessons build into Kilkenny city from the south, on the Suir-side roads.
Nore-valley R-roads taught weekly
Our Kilkenny instructors drive the Nore-valley R-roads through Bennettsbridge, Thomastown and Inistioge weekly with EDT learners. Riverside-junction work and the mid-county route into the marble city are part of basic Kilkenny EDT, not a paid extra.
Castlecomer coordinated, not abandoned
North-Kilkenny learners sit closer to Carlow town than to Kilkenny city. We pick up locally and coordinate the EDT so the southbound run to the marble-city centre lands in the back half of the programme, not as a long single drive on lesson one.
Marble city, the Nore and the southern villages
Where is the Kilkenny driving test centre
Kilkenny's single driving test centre is in Kilkenny city. Your pretest works the approach roads, marble-city streets, ring junctions and roundabouts around the centre. The Nore-side roads from Bennettsbridge and Thomastown feed in from the south. Confirm your test centre booking on the official RSA system before your test date.
Can I sit my test in Kilkenny if I live in Waterford or Tipperary
Yes, the test booking is on you with the RSA, but Kilkenny is the southern-most Leinster centre and many cross-border learners prefer it to a Munster centre. We pick up from the Suir-side villages and the western edge for cross-border learners; the lessons run into Kilkenny city for centre practice.
Are the Castlecomer villages covered
Yes. Coverage extends across north Kilkenny including Castlecomer, Clogh, Moneenroe and Castlewarren. Pickup terms match the rest of the county. North-Kilkenny learners spend later EDT lessons running south on the N77 toward the Kilkenny city centre.
Do lessons cover the Nore valley villages
Yes. The Nore valley south of Kilkenny city, from Bennettsbridge through Thomastown and Inistioge, is part of the standard catchment. Valley learners spend the first half of EDT on the riverside R-roads and the second half on the run into the city centre.
How much do lessons cost in Kilkenny
Kilkenny manual lessons start from €49.00 per lesson with the 12-lesson EDT package (€587.95 total). Single manual lessons cost €53.27. Full Kilkenny pricing is on the price list.
Can I sit the test in your car
Yes. Your Kilkenny pretest and your driving test happen in the same dual-controlled car. We arrange the booking and the meet-up at the Kilkenny city test centre.
