The Lilywhite county, commuting

Two test centres. The N7 corridor. The Curragh in the middle.

Kildare is Dublin's commuter county. Most Kildare learners drive into Dublin five days a week once they pass. The shape of the EDT here has to reflect that, not pretend the test ends and the driving stays local.

Kildare is the Dublin commuter county, with the N7 corridor running south-west to north-east through the middle. Naas and Newbridge sit in central Kildare, ten kilometres apart, each with its own test centre. Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip and the north-Kildare commuter villages line the N4 / Dublin road. Athy holds south Kildare on the N9. The Curragh racecourse and the Bog of Allen sit in the western half.

Kildare's two driving test centres each have their own approach geometry. Your Kildare pretest practises whichever centre you book. The choice between Naas and Newbridge is not a long drive; the centres are ten kilometres apart. But each examiner pool runs different local roads, so the EDT-to-pretest sequence depends on which one you pick.

Your Kildare Approved Driving Instructor lives in your half of the county. North-Kildare instructors know the Maynooth and Celbridge roads; central instructors know the Naas and Newbridge approaches; south-Kildare instructors know the Athy run. EDT, automatic and pretest with car hire all run from each catchment.

Two centres in central Kildare

Naas or Newbridge

North-central Kildare

Naas test centre

Naas centre sits in north-central Kildare, with the town's main streets and the N7 ring junctions making up the standard approach. Examiners use the local roads around Naas town for most of the test loop.

Your Kildare pretest with car hire for Naas runs the local approach into the centre on the N7-side, where most of the centre's local routes start. North-Kildare and east-Kildare learners typically book here.

Mid-Kildare, by the Curragh

Newbridge test centre

Newbridge centre is ten kilometres south of Naas. The approach mixes town-centre traffic with the streets out toward the Curragh. Examiners use a different set of local routes here than at Naas.

If your home is closer to Newbridge or to the Curragh-side villages, your Kildare pretest works the routes around that centre instead. Same dual-controlled car, different centre, different practice loops.

EDT shaped by the Dublin commute

Twelve lessons that prepare for what comes after the test

Kildare EDT carries a particular weight. Most learners here are not just preparing to pass; they are preparing to drive a high-volume commuter corridor every working day after they pass. The N7 north toward Dublin, the M-corridor that picks up where the N7 ends, the Maynooth-side corridor for north-Kildare learners. We work the N-road sections of those corridors into EDT itself, not as a post-test upgrade.

The two-centre choice (Naas or Newbridge) shapes the back half of EDT. Naas-bound learners get more N7-side approach work; Newbridge-bound learners spend more time on the Curragh-side roads. The early EDT lessons (universal observation, junction-reading and parking work) are the same regardless of centre.

South-Kildare learners have a different shape. Athy, Castledermot and the southern villages sit on the N9 corridor toward Carlow town. The pretest at Naas or Newbridge means a longer drive north for centre work in the back half of EDT. We build that into the schedule, not into a single long lesson.

The full EDT programme is twelve hours wherever you start it. For Kildare pricing across packages, see the price list.

Corridors to Dublin and beyond

The N7, the N9, and the lateral N-roads

The N7 north to Dublin

The N7 leaves Naas north toward Dublin, carrying most of the Kildare commute into the city. Sallins, Clane and the central-Kildare villages all feed onto it. The corridor is the spine of Kildare's working day.

The N9 south to Carlow town

The N9 leaves Newbridge south through Kilcullen and on toward Athy and Carlow town. South-Kildare learners practise this stretch in EDT. The Carlow border sits past the south-Kildare villages.

The N4 corridor through Maynooth and Leixlip

The N4 runs across north Kildare through Leixlip, Maynooth and Kilcock toward Mullingar. North-Kildare commuter learners use this corridor toward Dublin daily. EDT lessons cover the high-volume commuter junctions on it.

South-west on the N7 toward Limerick

The same N7 that runs north to Dublin runs south-west out of central Kildare toward Portlaoise and on to Limerick. Kildare commuters who work in Dublin Airport or the south-west use opposite ends of the same road.

What our two-centre, commuter coverage means

Two pools, corridor practice, post-test reality

Two centre catchments, separate instructor pools

We split Kildare instructor coverage between a Naas pool and a Newbridge pool. Your instructor lives in your half of the county and works the centre you have booked. We do not have one instructor cover both Naas approach work and Newbridge approach work, because those are different test environments.

N7 corridor traffic taught from weekly use

Most Kildare learners commute into Dublin five days a week after they pass. We work N7-corridor traffic, junction-loading on the Naas-Dublin stretch, and the Dublin-edge junction sequences into EDT itself. Other counties teach this as a post-test upgrade; we treat it as standard Kildare EDT.

EDT shaped for the post-test commute

South-Kildare and west-Kildare learners get a different EDT shape. Centre-approach work is condensed into the back half because the daily-commute roads matter more day-to-day than the local centre roads. We adjust the lesson plan; you do not have to ask for the adjustment.

Common Kildare questions

Naas, Newbridge and the commuter villages

Where are the Kildare driving test centres

Kildare has two driving test centres. One in Naas, one in Newbridge, ten kilometres apart in central Kildare. Your pretest works the approach roads, town-centre traffic, junctions and roundabouts around whichever centre you book. Confirm your test centre booking on the official RSA system before your test date.

Naas or Newbridge for my test

Either works. Most learners pick the centre nearest home. Naas is closer for north-central and east-Kildare learners. Newbridge is closer for the south side and the Curragh-area learners. Once you pick, your pretest practice is at that centre, on those local roads, not the other one.

Are the north-Kildare commuter villages covered

Yes. Coverage extends across north Kildare including Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip, Kilcock and Straffan. Pickup terms match the rest of the county. Most north-Kildare learners spend later EDT lessons running south on the N7 to whichever Kildare centre they have booked.

Do lessons include Dublin-corridor commuter traffic

Yes. Most Kildare learners will commute into Dublin five days a week after they pass, so we work N7-corridor traffic into the EDT itself, not as a post-test extra. The dual-carriageway and high-volume traffic competence land in the rural-driving phase with the dual-controlled car.

How much do lessons cost in Kildare

Kildare manual lessons start from €49.00 per lesson with the 12-lesson EDT package (€587.95 total). Single manual lessons cost €53.27. Full Kildare pricing is on the price list.

Can I sit the test in your car

Yes. Your Kildare pretest and your driving test happen in the same dual-controlled car. We arrange the booking and the meet-up at whichever Kildare centre you have booked, Naas or Newbridge.

Pick a Kildare lesson, north or south

Tell us whether you start from Maynooth, Naas, Newbridge, Athy or one of the bog-side villages, and we will match you with an instructor in that catchment. View the Kildare lesson packages or call to talk through the centre choice.
