Omeath junctions: what learners work on

The R173 / village junction at the seafront

Where the R173 along the lough meets the village promenade and the pier road. The T junction is the kind of feature where observation tends to slip if a learner hasn't worked it before.

We run this junction in the EDT lessons before the pretest, so by test day it's a repeat. Most Omeath learners build their confidence here on the way in and out of Carlingford.

I recently passed my test and my instructor was William Rooney. this man is more than qualified to make you pass the test, he handled himself with complete and utter respect, professionalism and diligence. he has more than a few tricks up his sleeve to help anyone pass the test, all while he makes sure your safe on the road. I recommend to anyone who needs lessons to give Will a call, while I was on the waiting list for a year I didn’t do a single lesson and 3 days before the test I had a 2 hour lesson with will and he had me good to go. thanks again Will and I wish you the very best in all aspects of life ( I do recommend you do more than a 2 hour lesson especially 3 days before test on top off the 12 you need )

I used the RSA school of motoring to get my pretest done and use the car for the day of the test. The instructor Alan was a great help, very knowledgeable and he offered good insights which made the test overall much easier. I had failed my test 3 times before this and with Alan's guidance I was able to pass this time round! The car was clean, full of fuel and easy to drive. Very glad with the service

I had started driving a few years ago and had a bad experience previously that made me lack so much confidence that I thought driving just wasn't for me and stopped driving for about 3-4 years only having done 6 lessons at that stage. At the start of this year I had said to myself I really have to get back out on the road again and rang the RSA School of Motoring to get some information. I had requested a female instructor and they had marked me in with Martina and all I have to say if it wasn't for that girl I wouldn't of got my nerve back to get back out on the road again and go and sit my test and pass on my first time yesterday. She finished my lessons with me and thought me so much in the space of time we worked together. She really knows what she is talking about and if your a little bit nervous or alot nervous like me she is just so calm, composed and friendly that you really cannot feel anything else but at ease in the car beside her. Shes a brilliant instructor and such a lovely girl that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to go with RSA. Thank you so much Martina. X

Common questions

Driving lessons in Omeath: frequently asked questions

How much for an Omeath driving lesson?

A single manual lesson in Omeath is €53.27. The 12-lesson EDT package is €587.95. Automatic lessons cost €61.41 each or €659.24 for twelve. The R173 along the lough is the working stretch. Pricing.

Will my EDT include the R173 promenade in Omeath?

Yes. The R173 / village junction at the seafront, where the road along the lough meets the village promenade and the pier road, is on every Omeath lesson. The steep village road down to the lough-side pier teaches gradient and pedestrian observation. EDT detail.

Are automatic lessons run as far north as Omeath?

Yes. The Dundalk automatic instructor travels along the R173 to Omeath. €61.41 per hour, €659.24 for the 12-pack. Same border-village route, either gearbox. Automatic detail.

Could a female instructor reach Omeath?

Sometimes. Omeath is half an hour from the Dundalk depot, so the female-instructor rota is tighter than for towns near the centre. Mark your preference on the contact form and we'll be honest about what fits.

Will I be charged for the Omeath pick-up?

No. The R173 trip out from Dundalk is on the school's clock. The lesson begins when the dual-controlled car is parked outside your house in Omeath, not when the engine starts at the depot. Same rule as every Cooley village.

How long is the drive from Omeath to the Dundalk test centre?

About thirty minutes, twenty-five kilometres along the R173 through Carlingford and Ballymascanlan. Pretest lessons rehearse that exact morning loop, so the trip into the Carrickmacross Road on test day is one you've already done.

Will lessons cover the steep road down to the pier?

Yes. The pier descent, with summer pedestrian traffic and a gradient that catches learners on the brake, is a slow-speed lesson with consequence. We work the descent both ways with the gear and the brake called out until the routine is automatic.
